And when the people came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord here from Shiloh, that it may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.”
1 Samuel 4:3 ESV
When Eli was still the High Priest, and Samuel was still a young prophet, the Israelites battled against the Philistines. In a preliminary battle, they lost and wondered why they did so.
Their answer was to immediately go and get the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh, because they thought that just having it in their camp gave them some special power.
They were wrong. And many Israelites died that day.
Why? Because they put their faith in a box and not in the One who made the box holy.
The Ark was created by human hands. It was holy because God chose to make it holy. There was no magic or power in the Ark itself.
Instead, the Israelites should have taken time to seek God to find out why they had been defeated. Then they would have realized that God was not pleased with Eli’s family and thousands wouldn’t have died.
We do the same thing!
Instead of seeking God and waiting in His Presence, we try to rush to make things happen. We put our trust in things or other people when we should put our faith and trust in Jesus.
Seeking God isn’t easy. If it was, everyone would do it. It takes patience and a heart that truly seeks the Lord.
In your life, in the things that you are going through, take time to seek Jesus. Seek His direction and not what seems right or what others might be telling You.
He will show you and direct your path, if you will let Him.
Father, thank You for caring about what is going on in my life. Give me patience and endurance to wait on You and hear Your voice.
