8 But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste? 9 For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me.11 For you always have the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. 12 For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial.13 Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”. Matthew 26:8-13 NASB
People might see what Christians do for Jesus as a waste. They might think the tithes and offerings we give, the sacrifices we make, the time we devote is all foolishness. “Why would a powerful God need all that?”
This woman didn’t have to break an expensive jar of perfume and pour it on Jesus. He would have gone to the cross just the same. He would have risen on the third day still. But Jesus mentioned that because she did this, what she did would be spoken of in memory of her.
It wasn’t her act as much as her heart. She came devoted and changed. She took the most expensive thing she could buy, the greatest thing she good give in her eyes and brought it and anointed the Lord. It’s not an issue of how much she spent as much as how much she loved. She wanted to do something great for Jesus. This is what she knew.
We also never know what is going to come about because we make these decisions in our life, to do something for Jesus. This woman couldn’t have known that Jesus was about to be betrayed and killed. He would be given a criminal’s death and wouldn’t be given the honor of His body prepared for burial. So what this woman did was huge!
People will bother and make fun of us because what we do for Jesus seems foolish. But in His eyes, it is great.
I need to approach the things I do for Jesus in a different mindset. Many times I can feel I’m doing something for someone because God wants me to do it.
Instead, I should do it because I love and I’m devoted to Jesus. I’m not looking for an outcome or a blessing. I’m looking to serve and honor Him. He will see it and notice it. He is all that matters!
Lord, thank you that I have an opportunity to do something great for You everyday I’m alive. I pray that the things I do brings You honor and that You are pleased with it. Help me to keep my eyes on You and not on what is around me or even the immediate result of what I do for You in this world. I know I won’t always understand what or why, but I trust that it is for You and Your Kingdom.
