Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good! You will surely wear out, both you and these people who are with you, for this is too heavy a burden for you; you are not able to do it by yourself.
Exodus 18:17-18 NET
Moses’ father-in-law Jethro met up with Moses and the Israelites after the Exodus. He spent time with Moses, heard about all the ways that God had blessed them and was able to see Moses lead the people.
At one point, Jethro saw Moses judging and dealing with problems that the Israelites had between each other. It took all day, with the Israelites standing around.
Jethro realized that this was a big burden on Moses as well as the Israelites. He could also see that if Moses continued to do this, he wouldn’t get the other important things done.
So Jethro offered Moses some advice.
You see, we all need a Jethro in our lives. We need others who can see our situation from the outside in and offer good, reliable advice.
Sometimes, we just get too bogged down in our situations that we don’t make good decisions or we don’t see how things could be done better.
Of course, everything should be taken to the Lord and you should let the Holy Spirit guide you and lead you.
But remember, sometimes the Lord uses others to bring you a message you need to hear.
Moses talked directly with God. But it took Jethro to help him understand that he needed to consider a different way.
God used Jethro, someone Moses respected, to speak into his life.
Prayerfully consider advice. Be led by the Holy Spirit. The Lord loves you and He wants the very best for you.
Father, thank You for speaking and leading me by the Holy Spirit. But I also thank You for those You bring in my life that speak words of truth.
