O Lord our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
Psalms 99:8 ESV
There are two sides of God that you need to understand. One is that of a loving Father. The other is that of a Righteous Judge.
These two sides of God are “on” or active or however you would like to describe them, all the time!
He forgives your sin when you humble yourself, repent and ask Him for forgiveness.
But He also punishes sin.
Forgiveness doesn’t take away the consequences of sin here on Earth. But, it does makes you right in God’s sight spiritually.
For example, let’s say a person lived an immoral life and had many sexual partners. At one point they contracted a sexually transmitted disease. Later, they give their heart to Jesus and get right with God. Getting right with God doesn’t mean that the sexually transmitted disease goes away. It is a consequence of a life that wasn’t living the way God intended.
Now, that isn’t to say that God doesn’t heal. He does. And He might do that. It has happened before. But it must be understood that it is a separate act than getting right with God.
The point is that we might be right with God, but still deal with the consequences of our behavior.
Don’t confuse the two!
And remember, this world isn’t all there is! This world is temporary!
Your real life is caught up with Jesus.
Father, thank You for forgiveness and making us right in Your sight. That is all that truly matters.
