The Wrong Busy

But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42 NASB

We value being busy doing “things.” It makes it look like we are productive and getting things done!

But what is the lasting effect?

The truth is that we spend a lot of time doing things that don’t truly matter.

Martha was trying to be an awesome hostess. It was what she was “supposed” to do and maybe what others even expected of her.

Her sister Mary didn’t worry about the other people in the house. She didn’t worry about the crackers that were put out or the temperature of the punch. She wanted to listen to Jesus.

Jesus told Martha she was worrying too much about the situation and about Mary’s lack of help.

But Mary was focused on the right thing.

What about you? Are you focusing on the right things or are you preoccupied with all the other things that don’t truly matter?

Take the time to seek Him, sit at His feet and learn what He truly desires from you. All the other things that aren’t as important will begin to be put in their proper perspective.

Father, help me be more like Mary and less like Martha.

Peace, Todd
