8 So the Lord called Samuel again for the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli discerned that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 And Eli said to Samuel, “Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
1 Samuel 3:8-9 NASB
Samuel was one of the greatest prophets in all of Israel’s history. But at some point, he had to learn how to identify, listen to and follow the word of the Lord. He learned to follow the Lord because He had someone teaching him what to look for and how to respond.
Every believer needs the same thing. Believers need people in their lives that will help point them to Scripture. They need people in their lives that will share their testimonies and encourage them to live for the Lord. They need people to show them how to pray and intercede and how to wait on God.
One main way believers learn all this is by going to church on a regular basis. Listening to the pastor’s message, being around other Christians is important to grow and mature as a Christian.
Another way is to being involved in constant fellowship with believers, like in a small group or Bible study. Sunday morning is not enough!
Having people pour into your life is important. But you should also pour into the lives of others. You don’t have to be a Bible scholar, you just need to be willing to obey and trust in the Lord. Samuel gave Eli a confirmation to an earlier word the Lord had sent. It was the first time Samuel had ever heard God’s voice. He was obedient and trusted.
I need to keep myself fed and around the things of God. This means that I listen to the Word of God preached. I also need to spend time in fellowship with other Christians. I can learn a lot and be encouraged by spending time with other believers, no matter how much Bible knowledge I have.
Lastly, there are young believers out there that I can speak into their lives. There are people out there that I can influence for God. I need to be obedient and trust Him.
Lord, thank You for allowing me to know You. I thank You that You count me worthy enough to show me what it is to live in a close relationship with You. Help me to have the words to say and the encouragement to give other believers.
