But the Lord struck down some of the people of Beth Shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the Lord; he struck down 50,070 of the men. The people grieved because the Lord had struck the people with a hard blow.
2 Samuel 6;19 NET
The Ark of the Lord had been captured in battle. That was a terrible blow to the Israelites.
The Philistines tried to place the Ark of the Covenant in with their god, but it didn’t turn out to good for them. The Lord afflicted them with plagues.
They finally realized they needed to send the Ark back. They put it on a new cart and attached two cows to it. The cows traveled to Israel, to Beth Shemesh.
The people were glad and worshipped the Lord. But God still killed over 50,000 of them. Why? They we’re happy. They we’re worshipping. They were sacrificing to the Lord.
But, they didn’t respect the Ark of the Covenant like God had set up.
Regular everyday people were looking inside of the Ark. This wasn’t supposed to happen. In fact, the Ark was symbolic of God’s Presence here on Earth!
It was supposed to be honored, respected and treated as holy. They treated it like a common artifact.
Here’s the important part. God doesn’t change the fact that righteousness, being right with Him, is important. He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
If He dealt with unrighteousness and sin then, He will deal with it today too. He will deal with it on Judgement Day as well.
Are you treating the things of God in your life as holy? Are you treating Him as holy, or just another event or thing to do in your week?
Check your heart. Because He is checking your heart too.
Father, help me to identify any area in my life that is not completely Yours. Help me to align myself with Your ways.
