11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:11-12 NASB
Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is a powerful message that we should take care to heed. It is the first real message from God to His people in over 400 years!
In these verses, Jesus is saying “when” not “if” people insult and persecute you. Jesus expected persecution, we should too!
But Jesus also said, that you would be in good company, because people persecuted the prophets who came before.
People don’t want to be reminded of the things of God because it reminds them of their sin and need for a Savior. They rather live the way they want to live and will be mean and evil towards anyone who points the way to Jesus.
The Bible says as we get closer to the end times, this is going to happen more and more. The world will become hostile to God. It already is! Be ready!
Jesus said that our response to persecution is to rejoice and be glad. You do that by focusing on Heaven and what is waiting there for you.
This time on Earth, although sometimes it seems to go slowly, will pass quickly. Eternity is a long time!
The short periods of discomfort, pain, isolation and persecution, are nothing compared to what is waiting for us in Heaven.
Be here…But live there. In other words, remind yourself that you are here temporarily. Your real home is Heaven!
Lord, help us not to shy away from living for You. Help us to be full of faith and ready to provide a reason for our belief. But help us to also know our real home is waiting for us in Heaven. One day we know we will be there. We long for that day!
