“Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.
1 Samuel 15:22 NASB
Saying that someone is sacrificing seems so much more spiritual! We give up, sometimes it’s painful and we are OK with that, because we are “sacrificing” and that is supposed to happen.
But sacrifice usually happens on our terms. “We” sacrifice. “We” give up something. “We” feel the pain. It misses the point of why we do what we do.
Obedience on the other hand is consistent. It is what is supposed to happen on a daily basis. Yes, sometimes we don’t feel like it, but it’s not a one time thing. It is part of who we are.
And this is what the Lord desires. He desires a relationship that we are totally committed to. He doesn’t want us every once in a while, or when we are ready. He wants a relationship with us every single day. He wants us to obey Him because He knows that is the best thing for us.
Is my mind set on obedience to the things of God? Or do I look at my relationship with God as one of sacrifice…I give up in order to get His blessings?
What change can I make today to be more obedient? How can I be more consistent in walking with the Lord?
Lord, show me the things that I need to remove so that I am living in obedience. Help me to live for you with joy and peace and know that obedience to Your ways is the way I want to live.
