Jeroboam then thought to himself: “Now the Davidic dynasty could regain the kingdom. If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem, their loyalty could shift to their former master, King Rehoboam of Judah. They might kill me and return to King Rehoboam of Judah.”
1 Kings 12:26-27 NET
When Solomon sinned by worshipping false gods, God told Jeroboam (not one of Solomon’s heirs) that he would get half the kingdom and 10 of the tribes of Israel.
It happened just like the Lord said!
But after Jeroboam became King of Israel, he instituted false worship. He was afraid that people in Israel traveling to Jerusalem would turn their hearts back to Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, and kill him in return.
And that’s the problem…
He “thought” vs trusting in God’s Word.
God’s Word, through the prophet, had already come to pass. Why did he then not fully trust? Jeroboam led Israel down a path that eventually led to them being conquered and exiled by Assyria.
We run into problems too when we think we know better and we choose to live counter to what God’s Word says!
God doesn’t change! His Word doesn’t change! Saying that we now live in a “modern society” or “we have more knowledge now” are not reasons to live contrary to what God says!
He is God! He knew the future when His Word was written down years ago. He knew the advances and knowledge we would have!
Are there things in your life that cause you to live contrary to God’s Word? If so, you shouldn’t mess around with it. Reading the Bible will tell you what God thinks of that and how He handles it.
It’s not worth it to live contrary to God’s Word! Period!
Father, help me to understand and love to obey Your Word. Give me a desire to live my life pleasing to You.
Peace
Todd
