For we have brought nothing into this world and so we cannot take a single thing out either. But if we have food and shelter, we will be satisfied with that.
1 Timothy 6:7-8 NET
Can you imagine most Christians today just being satisfied with food and shelter and that’s it? No, probably because that’s not what is valued in this world. And many Christians are worldly.
We measure success by STUFF. The more stuff you have, the more successful you are… Or, if we want to be more spiritual, the more “blessed” you are.
But Paul was admonishing Timothy to remember that this world is not permanent. You didn’t bring anything into this world… You’re not taking anything with you… Why would you anyway? Heaven is so perfect, anything from Earth would be out of place.
An important aspect to our spiritual walk is to not allow anything other than Jesus have a hold on us.
If we are so concerned about our stuff, we will worry, acquire more, fight for our stuff. If we realize that stuff is not what truly matters, then we can focus on what truly matters.
This doesn’t mean not to be a good steward of what God has brought into your life. But it does mean that you are to use your financial and material blessings as resources for his Kingdom.
Does your stuff have you? If you were to lose it all, would it leave an emptiness that you couldn’t replace?
In the natural, it is easy to happen because we are ruled by our senses. But I would suggest to you that you start to reflect and identify how important Jesus is.
Jesus has to be the most important priority in your life. Without Him, you’re sunk here and in eternity.
As you draw closer and closer to Jesus, the world has less and less of a hold. It is true. But it requires, and you should desire this being a Christian, getting closer to Jesus each day.
What is keeping you from drawing closer to Him? Remove that from your life so that you can truly be free in Him.
Lord, how I desperately need you more than anything else. You are my desire and the reason for living. Keep my eyes fixed on you, anything else will be a disppointment.
