When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy.
Luke 18:22-23 NET
The wealthy ruler wanted to know what he needed to do to receive eternal life. Who doesn’t want that, to live forever?
Jesus told this guy what he needed to do. Apparently, this wealthy guy had kept all of the commandments since he was a young person. He wanted to know if there was something else he needed to do.
You can almost see Jesus peering into his eyes and seeing the hold his wealth had on him. His confidence, his identity, his trust was in his wealth.
Jesus said the one thing he lacked was to give away all of his money and follow Him.
Jesus knew the hold his money had on him. It was too important. The rich guy went away sad because he couldn’t let go of his money.
We tend to do that too! We hold on to things and as a result, don’t live for Jesus fully.
It might not be money. It could be feelings of hurt, a relationship that is not spiritually healthy, anger or alcohol. There are many things that keep people from following Jesus completely.
In order to know if there is anything that you wouldn’t give up for Jesus, you need to ask yourself if there is anything in your life that you are not willing to give up at all and never go back to.
If anything gives you pause, you might have a problem. Nothing can come before your relationship with Jesus. Nothing!
Does that mean you leave your job, family, loved ones behind and go to the mission field? No!
It means that your life decisions are not made with earthly things as the starting point.
Everything, every decision, starts with Jesus and goes from there. He should rule your heart and your thoughts.
When you seek the Kingdom of God first, everything else falls into place.
This is what the rich guy couldn’t see. This is what many Christians can’t see either.
Is there something you need to give up to follow Him all the way? Don’t delay. Nothing is worth holding on to compared to Jesus!
Put Him first today!
Lord help me to understand that nothing compares to You. Help me to be free from anything that wants to have a hold on me here on this Earth.
