But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”
1 Samuel 8:19-20 ESV
God wants us to be different. We are not supposed to think and act like the rest of the world. But it seems that most Believers, instead of looking like Jesus, want to look like the world.
Jesus relied on His relationship with the Father. He didn’t allow the traditions of the Jews to distract Him.
We need to be more like Jesus and allow our relationship with the Father to be the driving force in our life.
The people in Samuels day wanted a king. But God was supposed to be their king. He would speak through His judges and prophets. But the people wanted to be like everyone else. They wanted a king they could see and that would direct them.
They didn’t care that it would cost them. They exchanged the Kingship of God the Father for an earthly king to be like everyone else!
As Believers, we are called to be different. We are not of this world. We don’t have to go through another man, a king, a priest or pastor. We can go directly to the Father because of Jesus.
Don’t let anything come before you and your relationship with the Lord. Take time to reflect and make sure that He has your full attention and loyalty.
And if you have to, remove things that would cause a distraction between you and God.
Father, let me always look to You. Help me remember, when times are good or when they are rough, that You are my King and I belong to You.
