Keeping Up Appearances

22 For I did not speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23 But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, that it may be well with you.’
Jeremiah 7:22-23 NASB

Before God established the priestly role and instituted the sacrificial system to the people of Israel, He asked them to obey His commands.

In Jeremiah’s time, they believed that they were good with the Lord, just as long as they were keeping up appearances. It all looked good on the outside!

But God cares more about what is on the inside. He rather have you truly obey Him from your heart, than to go through a ritual.

Today, we go through rituals too. We might say grace right before we eat. We might even get up on Sunday morning and go to church. We might say the right things. But in the end, it is all to keep up appearances, if we don’t truly follow the Lord and obey His commands. There is no halfway or partial credit with the Lord.

Don’t get caught up in “doing” things for the Lord before you examine why you’re doing it. Going through rituals to check them off a list will be for nothing if you don’t come to the Lord with a heart that is sold out and is ready to obey Him.

And the thing is that the Lord doesn’t make you jump through a bunch of crazy hoops. His burden is easy and light. You just follow His ways!

If you truly love Him. If you truly come from a place that wants to honor God, following His commands are easy.

It comes down to Lordship. Is Jesus your friend? Savior? Or Lord? Jesus has to be your Lord! When that is established, it means that you come under submission to Him and His ways. Nothing else matters.

Jesus said, “if you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Don’t just do what you need to so you look like you serve Him. Serve and obey Him from a completely loving and obedient heart!

Lord, forgive me for the times that I just go through the motions. I want a love that is deeper than that. I desire to be so crazy about you that walking in Your ways is the only way for me.
