19 But the people refused to heed Samuel’s warning. Instead they said, “No! There will be a king over us! 20 We will be like all the other nations. Our king will judge us and lead us and fight our battles.”
1 Samuel 8:19-20 NET
As the Prophet Samuel grew older, he appointed his sons to judge Israel. They didn’t honor God like Samuel and instead used their position to extract money and favors from people.
The people of Israel rejected Samuel’s sons and instead asked for a king. They wanted a king like all the other nations.
God knew this day would happen. He had Moses write the requirements down in the Book of Dueteronomy.
But Samuel was still upset because of their request. God assured Samuel, they we’re rejecting Him, not Samuel.
Even after telling the people all the things a king would require of them, they still wanted a king. They wanted to be like everyone else.
God’s people are not like everyone else. We are supposed to be different! Jesus is our King. We are under His rule.
The way we live our lives, every part of it, shouldn’t be according to the way the rest of the world lives, including the current trends in America. It should be completely based on what God wants for us.
He spells it out in His Word. It is our responsibility to learn and grow and know what He desires from us.
Be different. Be what God wants you to be, not what others or the world say you should be.
Father, everything I desire and everything I aspire to is to bring You glory. Help me to reject things in my own life that are not from You. And help me to not miss anything You want to do in me and through me.
