Scripture
Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed themselves down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do as their fathers.
Judges 2:17 NASB
Observation
Maybe this new generation wasn’t taught by their fathers fully. Or, maybe they were enticed by the other religions and what they offered. Regardless of the reason of their disobedience, the Scripture said they turned “quickly.”
It happens faster than anyone truly notices. One day you’re worshipping God and the next you’re chasing after other things. Why? Is God not good enough? Is God not powerful enough? Is God not fun enough?
No! People can turn easily to other things because they don’t truly know Him. In reading this chapter, you will notice that this happened after the previous generation, who knew Him and all His mighty works, died.
But not knowing Him like the previous generation did, coming out of the 40 years in the desert and conquering the land, is not an excuse. God can be known and in fact, makes Himself known.
Since He has made Himself known, it is not His responsibility to convince us. It is our responsibility to respond to Him.
Application
Will you reject or accept Him? Pray you accept Him! There is no true joy and peace outside of God’s grace. His grace makes it possible for you to live the life you truly desire in Him.
As you accept Him, grow in Him! This is only done when you spend time in the Word and the things of God. You have to keep the Lord close to your heart.
If not, the things of this world, worry, lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, will “quickly” influence you more than the things of God.
Don’t let your guard down. Don’t neglect the things of God in your life. Stay strong in Him!
Prayer
Lord, help us to stay focused on You. Let their not be anything in our lives that would entice us to turn away from You. If something is there, help us to identify it and get rid of it. You are all we need.
Peace
