For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. John 13:15 NASB
Big outreach events, like the Billy Graham Crusades, usually get the recognition and attention of the media. But are they truly effective?
With the big numbers that big events draw, there usually isn’t the response that you would think.
Don’t get me wrong. They aren’t bad. They aren’t wrong. They just aren’t as effective as the example that Jesus gave…
Jesus had big events too. The feeding of the 5000 was a big event. There was actually more there than 5000. But Jesus didn’t come out of that event with 5000 new disciples. In fact, the crowd soon turned and left because He didn’t continue to perform miracles.
Before He was betrayed and crucified, Jesus showed by example how the disciples were supposed to minister and reach out.
Jesus took off his outer garments and washed their feet. He took the role of a servant, one of the lowest classes of servants, to help them understand how they should reach others.
After, Jesus told them that a servant isn’t greater than his master. If He did this, they should follow His example.
Serving others, making a difference in another’s life, shows the love of Jesus on a personal level.
How can you follow Jesus’ example today? What can you do to serve someone else? It could be as simple as just being there for someone and taking time to listen.
Sometimes it is the simple things. But the simple are effective.
Father, help me to listen to the Holy Spirit and know exactly how You desire me to serve today.
