Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of the land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness? Now do you want to make yourself a prince over us? Numbers 16:23 NET
How easily people get off track!
Dathan and Abiram joined the rebellion of Korah against Moses and Aaron. They murmured against Moses and Aaron and helped to turn people away from following them.
When Moses asked for them to come to the Tabernacle, they refused. Instead, they said the words found here in verse 13.
The problem is that they got it so wrong! The Land of Canaan was the land that was flowing with milk and honey. They instead called Egypt the land flowing with milk and honey.
How quickly they forgot that they were slaves there in Egypt. How quickly they forgot that they cried out for deliverance. How quickly they forgot how their male babies were killed on order of Pharoah. How easily they turned the blessings of God into curses.
And what happened to those who rebelled? God didn’t take their rebellion lightly! The ground opened up and swallowed them up alive, their families and all their belongings!
This should be a warning to us. We should remember the life that the Lord has brought us out of. We should remember how we we’re on our own, full of sin, headed to destruction.
But Jesus, when we were yet sinners, died for us. A land better than flowing with milk and honey awaits us.
Don’t lose hope when things get hard. Instead, preserve and ask for God’s mercy. He will come through for you in your time of need.
Lord, thank You for the life of hope that I now live. Help me to remember the past, so I know how You saved me. And help me to look forward to the future, when I, along with all of Your people, experience the new Heaven and the new Earth.
