Dependences on the Holy Spirit

While they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then, after they had fasted and prayed and placed their hands on them, they sent them off.
Acts 13:2-3 NET

There is a big difference in the way the early church followed God and they way the modern church follows God!

Today, the church is “strategic.” The church plans and researches. We get demographic information and target age groups and economic statuses. We are “purposeful.” We prepare this great plan, ask God to bless it and then execute it!

That is not God’s way. That is Business 101 and unfortunately, we have run the church like that in our modern age!

Church leaders who do this will tell you that it is all based on prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit, but it is not! They say that to make themselves and others feel better. They take the dependence on God and the Holy Spirit out of it!

The early church didn’t do things like that. Here in Acts we see that!

They were praying and fasting! Imagine that!!!!

In that time, they were led by the Holy Spirit to set apart Paul and Barnabas. THEN, they prayed and fasted some more!

The early church was dependent on the Holy Spirit. They were sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit said, “don’t go there,” they didn’t!

They sought the guidance and leading of the Holy Spirit!

Please ask yourself, how often does the church do that now? I’m talking about truly waiting and seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit before decisions are made! I’m not talking about praying a “bless this” prayer!

What about our services? God forbid our services go longer than an hour! People get up to leave! Forget about giving a Sabbath day to the Lord, most can’t even give an hour!

Ask yourself, how often do YOU wait on the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit instead of just plowing right ahead?

God can do more for you in one second than you can do in a lifetime of striving!

If Jesus is Your Lord and Savior, let Him guide you through the Holy Spirit that He promised to you!

Dependency on God is everything!

Father, help me to wait and always seek You in everything that I need to do. Help me to stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit so I can hear Your small still voice in those times I need to make decisions. Reveal the path that You have for me as I live for You.
