And David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.”
2 Samuel 5:19 ESV
In a given day, we make many decisions. Some of these decisions are fairly mundane, “What am I going to eat? What am I going to wear?” But some decisions can affect us in major ways. “Should I take that new job? Should I buy that house? Should I get involved with that person?”
It is smart to get advice and insight to help you navigate those very important decisions. Again, the wrong move can affect you for a long while and cause grief that you wouldn’t have if you would have made a good decision.
King David knew how important seeking good advice was. When it came to big decisions for his Kingdom, He would seek the Lord. And every time He did seek the Lord, God came through for him in a big way. Note – The times He didn’t seek the Lord, He messed up big time!
The Believer has this ability to receive help and advice from the Lord too! We don’t have to go to a priest or consult the Lord through the Urim and Thummim. We can go straight to the Lord and He will answer us.
But it is important to understand that God isn’t your blue genie! He isn’t there for you whenever you call Him up. He is God. He is Your Lord. He has made a way for us to come into His presence to seek help in our time of need. He has allowed us to have a relationship with Him.
And just like any relationship that you have with a person, the more you spend time with that person, the more you know him/her. It is the same with Jesus. You will know His advice and His purpose when you spend time with Him to get to know His will.
And that is the rub. People don’t want to spend time with Jesus. People don’t want to spend time in prayer. They don’t think it is worth it. They don’t think there is any benefit to talking to God, All Mighty! And because of that, they miss it! They miss God’s purpose for their life. They miss knowing God’s will.
There is no other way than to spend time with Him. This is something you shouldn’t neglect!
Father, thank You for revealing Yourself to me in a real way. Help me to always put You first.
