Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
John 3:36 ESV
If I choose to speed to work and pass a police officer who is monitoring drivers for speed, I will get a ticket.
I can tell that police officer that I believe that there should be a speed limit. I can even make an argument for a speed limit. But just believing or saying that I believe isn’t enough.
I would get a ticket, not for unbelief, but for not obeying the speed limit.
This is the same boat that many people who “believe” are in with their faith!
They “believe” that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died for their sins, but they don’t obey.
The verse here, verse 36, might be the last words that were recorded from John the Baptist.
He admonishes that those who don’t believe and obey, the wrath of God is still on them.
This is not a personal issue that God has with unbelievers. This is an issue that God has with sin.
In fact, God made a way for everyone to be saved when He sent Jesus to die on the cross. Sin has been taken care of. All the unbeliever has to do is believe and obey.
It is so easy. Yet so many don’t do it. And as a result, they will not see eternal life.
Belief is just the first step of living the life of obedience.
What about you? Do you believe and obey?
Father, thank You for the understanding that I can believe, obey and be saved. I pray for those who have not made the decision to obey. Help them understand that there is no other way to true life.
