14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 NASB
Jesus gave us an awesome responsibility. Instead of just being the light Himself, He calls us to be light. We have the opportunity AND ability through the Holy Spirit, to be light to everyone around us! Selah.
How many times do we choose to hide our light? Maybe because we are ashamed. Maybe because we will have to give answers and reasons that we don’t feel prepared to give. Maybe because we will have to change some things in our lives if we are going to be consistent with the message of being light.
The purpose of shining though, is to give God the glory. People should look at us, fallible, imperfect, unrighteous in our own right, and see God’s love and mercy. Your life will speak of the goodness of God.
I am always reminded, in my job, that “I’m always on.” As a person who has responsibility and authority to make decisions, others look to me. How much more should this be the case as a follower of Jesus Christ?
I need to live purposefully and intentionally. I need to shine my light at every opportunity. Shining my light should not only be in my speech and actions, but in my thoughts and even facial expressions.
Why wouldn’t I want to do this?
Lord, help me to be so aware of You that I’m always shining your light to the world around me. Help me to not only live like this when things are going well, but when things are tough and I don’t fully understand the issues and situations at hand. Let others see a loving and merciful God in my life.
