It came about when she pressed him daily with her words and urged him, that his soul was annoyed to death. So he told her all that was in his heart and said to her, “A razor has never come on my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will leave me and I will become weak and be like any other man.”
Judges 16:16-17 NASB
Are you amazed like me at the story of Samson and Delilah? Why in the world would someone want to stay with someone who annoyed your “soul to death?” Samson and Delilah weren’t married! On top of that, every time Delilah asked him how he could lose his strength, he somehow awoke to that predicament, with Philistine soldiers there ready to take him out. Why didn’t he see all of this?
Could it have been because he took the presence of the Lord in His life for granted? He did so many things that he shouldn’t have done as a Nazarite. Finally, he put himself in a situation where he would be so annoyed that he gave up the reason for his strength.
The Father wants the best for you. He knows what you need and He knows what you are to become. Jesus said that He would send the Holy Spirit to be in us and help us. It is imperative that we listen, obey and honor the Holy Spirit in our lives.
If, being beliver’s, we don’t listen to and obey the Holy Spirit, we will try to navigate this life using our own flesh and lusts. We can easily wind up like Samson, being in a place that is not good for us, being annoyed and not caring about putting our lives in someone else’s hands other than Jesus!
Take time to listen to and obey the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was talking about going to Heaven, He said that He would send the Holy Spirit to us. The problem is that we don’t truly understand the Holy Spirit! He is God! He is the Third Person of the Trinity. And Jesus said He would send Him to us!
Are you in a situation right now where you are making all the decesions…. Where you are in total control? Are you in a place that if the Holy Spirit tried to help you that you wouldn’t take His help because you know better?
Don’t be like Samson! Eventually, life on your terms will become annoying!
Lord, help us to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Help us to not take Your presence for granted and instead listen and obey. Help us to be so aware of Your presence that if we step out of it, we immediately know.
