So when Jesus had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table again and said to them, “Do you understand what I have done for you? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and do so correctly, for that is what I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example—you should do just as I have done for you.
John 13:12-15 NET
On the surface, we see Jesus being an example of a servant leader. But one might not know that the job of washing feet in that time was meant for the lowest of the low slaves.
Jesus was saying, be willing to do the lowest of the low. And because it was important, He showed His disciples by example.
Today, we might look at serving others as beneath us. Or if we don’t, we want the servant positions that would bring us the most recognition.
Would you be willing to serve, even if no one noticed? Would you serve even in the grimiest of places? People?
The thing is that there is someone who notices. In fact, there is someone who sees all the way to the intentions of your heart!
“For I have given you an example—you should do just as I have done for you.”
Are you too busy to serve?
The servant lifestyle is one of the heart. When you have the heart to serve, you look beyond all the trappings of our modern age and only see the love of Jesus.
There is always opportunities to serve. Your church, neighborhood, homeless, etc… You are always needed!
Will you ask the Lord to show you where? Will you ask Him to give you the right heart to serve?
Lord, help me to see others through Your eyes. Help me to serve because I want to be like You.
