So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord; and He could bear the misery of Israel no longer.
Judges 10:16 NASB
The Israelites went through this terrible cycle of turning from God after He would come and deliver them. The book of Judges is all about this cycle.
In chapter 10, it is recorded that they once again sinned by following and trusting other gods, instead of the One True God. God sent the Philistines and Ammonites to trouble them.
When they had had enough, and realized their sin, they cried out to God. He couldn’t take their misery for long.
You see, God doesn’t want to discipline His children. He does it because we are stubborn and get our hearts and minds off of Him. We start worshipping other gods or trust in our own ability. But He knows that the best place for us is right in His will. His discipline is to get us to come back to Him, not to punish us.
Discipline turns to punishment because we don’t turn back to God. Don’t be so stubborn! Submit your life to Him and see what happens!
Where did you get sidetracked? What are you putting before the Lord? He wants to be first in your life. When you think about it, He deserves that. It is not too much to ask. And if Jesus is your Lord and Savior, well then He is in control. You should be living according to His commands.
Lord, help us when we get our eyes off of You. Help us to settle in our hearts, once and for all, that there is none like You. Why would we give our hearts and minds to anyone or anything else? Be Lord of our lives.
