21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. 23All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”
Mark 7:21-23 NASB
We shouldn’t be surprised when we see evil multiply as people turn their backs on the Lord.
Left to our own devices, our hearts can become a nasty place. Because of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, and because of sin, the heart of man will do and accept all kinds of evil.
This all changes when we ask Jesus into our hearts. Being redeemed from sin and death, we now have the opportunity to live differently than our sinful nature. We can now live with the heart that the Lord has given us. The evil that once permeated our hearts is exchanged with joy, hope, love, peace, mercy and all the other godly attributes of the Lord.
We still make choices. We are still being renewed daily. We still need to stay focused and fill ourselves up with the things of God. But we now have the capacity to live according to God’s plan.
Just because someone has given their heart/life to the Lord, doesn’t mean that they will never do evil.
No one just commits adultery (sin). They think about it, allow their mind to entertain the thought, and then act on their desire. The same process happens when we choose to live for the Lord and allow His nature, His character to drive us.
Again, the difference for the redeemed is that you now have the ability to walk according to God’s nature. Walking according to God’s desires are accomplished as we spend time with Him and learn what He desires for us from His Word.
Lord, thank You for the ability to live with a new heart that reflects You in this world. Help us to walk according to Your ways and share the change in us with this world.
